Millers and processors must now source 40% of grain and oilseed raw materials locally. Irrigated growers will be best placed in a dry season.

Tomatoes, leafy greens, onions, potatoes and fruit are sold mostly through Mbare Musika and other city markets, to supermarkets on contract, and at the farm gate. Prices swing week to week, so the best protection is a buyer lined up before you plant — and water you control.

Drip irrigation and a borehole turn a vegetable plot into a year-round business. Forecasters expect below-normal rain from October to December across most of the country this season1 — a grower with water will have a market; one relying on rain may not have a crop.

Selling produce here. List the crop, the quantity, the grade and when it will be ready. Buyers want to know if you can supply every week, not just once.

Soya, groundnuts and beans

Oilseeds and pulses are in demand as millers and stockfeed makers look for local supply: from April 2026, companies have had to source 40% of their grain and oilseed raw materials locally.2

Government has also announced agro-processing zones in all ten provinces, to turn more raw produce into oils, dairy and packaged foods inside the country.3 Both point the same way: more local buyers for farmers who can supply steady volumes of good quality.

What buyers of produce check

  • Quality and grade. Size, ripeness, damage and pests — say it honestly in your listing.
  • Volume and timing. How much, and when it can be collected. Regular supply wins contracts.
  • Packing and transport. Crates, bags and who collects.
  • Payment. Cash on collection, or terms agreed in writing.
